White spot treatment requires appropriate conditions and age considerations. In addition, treatment effectiveness and final appearance may vary from person to person. Therefore, careful diagnosis and thorough explanation tailored to each patient are essential. Below are cases in which treatment may be difficult or require special consideration.
Cases Where Icon Treatment May Be Difficult
In the following cases, treatment may be declined or postponed:
Patients Under 15 Years of Age
- The whitening procedure required as part of Icon treatment may not yet be suitable.
- Tooth eruption may not be complete, and white spot lesions could appear on newly erupted areas even after treatment.
- If the teeth are not fully matured, there may be a greater risk of damage to the teeth.
Taking these factors into account, as a general rule, we provide treatment for patients aged 15 and older.
Pregnant Patients
As the treatment requires the use of solutions and extended clinical time, we prioritize safety and recommend that patients wait until after delivery to receive treatment.
Patients with Severe Decay, Periodontal Disease, or Tooth Fractures
Icon treatment is a procedure specifically for white opacities on the surface layer of the tooth.
If there is deep-seated tooth decay or severe periodontal disease, those conditions must be prioritized with appropriate treatments.
Cases Where Icon Alone May Not Be Sufficient
In cases where Icon treatment alone does not allow the white opacity to blend in completely, we may suggest other treatments such as “direct bonding.”
Based on the patient’s preferences and the condition of the teeth, we will propose the best treatment plan to achieve both aesthetic improvement and functional integrity.
Risks and Important Considerations
Individual Differences in Color Blending
Depending on the condition of the teeth and the depth of the white opacity, slight color differences may remain after treatment.
Possible Slight Surface Indentation
Depending on the internal condition of the white spot lesions, the Icon solution may cause a very slight indentation on the tooth surface. However, this does not affect the function or health of the tooth.
Important Post-Treatment Considerations
Immediately after treatment, strongly staining or acidic foods and beverages should be avoided. In addition, please refrain from using commercially available whitening toothpastes.
